"What Is This Thing?" is a song from the Phineas and Ferb episode "Blackout!", sung by Marshall Richards. It played while Candace has a mostly unseen but apparently comically violent ride in whatever device Phineas and Ferb had built during a city-wide power outage.

Lyrics

What is this thing that keeps dragging me around?
Is it mechanical, I recognize the sound,
And I'd give anything to be back on the ground
What is this thing?
What is this thing? Yeah.
What is this thing? Is it just a state of mind?
If this is Venice, then I've gone Venetian blind
I think my sanity is starting to unwind,
What is this thing?
What is this thing? Yeah.
What is this thing?
What is this thing? Yeah.
Is it a car wash or a pair of ankle weights?
Is it ninja or commemorative plates?
There's a phrase that comes to mind,
I'm not sure that it translates:
¿Qué es ésto?
What is this thing? Yeah.
What is this thing?
What is this thing? Yeah.

Background information

  • This is the first series' song performed by Marshall Richards (second in broadcast list).
  • "¿Qué es ésto?" means "What is this (thing)?" in Spanish.
  • In the Latin American Spanish version, called "¿Qué es esta cosa?", the singer said "What Is This Thing?" instead "¿Qué es esto?"
  • This song features a lot of "comical" things to Candace such as her being stretched across great distances like a cartoon character (The first time was Phintastic Ferbulous Car Wash)
  • Error: Candace was told to put on a mouth guard and lead apron before riding but those things were not visible on her during the song. (She did, however, think she had swallowed the mouth guard during the ride, and the apron could have been removed by the apparent violence of the ride.)
