Walt Disney Diamond Editions is a line of DVDs and Blu-rays that began with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on October 6, 2009. Disney began re-issuing Platinum Edition titles under a new Diamond Edition range on Blu-ray, 2-disc DVD sets, 3D, and Digital.

History

Overview

All the Platinum Edition titles will feature in this range, but they are not necessarily released in the same chronological order when they were released of the latter. Aladdin was going to be replaced by Fantasia & Fantasia 2000; however, these two films were removed from the line up, and were released as a special edition as one anthology, and had Aladdin brought back as a Diamond Edition.

Disney expects to release all its Diamond titles by 2016, which is due to the first-generation, non-Disney Vault line of animated feature-length films that are titled the Walt Disney Special Editions line. These movies (expect for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) are released as Digital Downloads (e.g. iTunes, Disney Digital, Amazon Instant Video).

According to recent Disney Animated Disney Movie Profits, other movies may be included in the Diamond line or put in the presigious Disney Vault, such as Alice in Wonderland (1951), Dumbo (1941), and even Tangled (2010).

Europe/U.S. differences

Starting in 2012, some differences in Diamond Editions have come into existence between the United States and Europe. In summer 2012, One Hundred and One Dalmatians was released onto Blu-Ray in Europe and Australia as a "special edition", featuring a static menu and no new special features. Some confusion arose over any upcoming American release of this title, since it is apparently still scheduled for American release as a Diamond Edition.

Furthermore, Peter Pan was also released as a non-commemorative Special Edition in Europe in November 2012. This edition featured no DisneyView to cover the black bars at the sides of the screen, a static menu and only a few bonus features, while the movie was still released as Diamond Edition on February 5, 2013 in the US and on June 5 2013 in Australia.

Finally, Aladdin is scheduled to be released to Blu-Ray in Europe and Australia in 2013, while still on hold till at least 2014 for the US. It is unclear if the new Aladdin release will be Diamond Edition or not: this seems to differ per country. There were also vague rumors of this new release being delayed.

To add to the confusion, The Jungle Book has now been confirmed as the fall Diamond Edition Blu-Ray for Europe, possibly replacing The Little Mermaid until the latter movie's theatrical re-release is finished in Europe.
