There have been several Disney theories all throughout the past year, but today I have just realized one of my own. We all know and love the story of The Little Mermaid, and have probably seen it enough times to notice the connections it has to other Disney films, such as the sunken ship being the same boat Elsa and Anna's parents died on. But one film that I know it has many connections with is the beloved Studio Ghibli film Ponyo. I'm guessing you can see the basic connection they have both being "fish tales", but we're about to go deeper into it. Did Hayao Miyazaki really base the story of Ponyo after The Little Mermaid? Let's take a look, shall we?
She is one of many children of a powerful, undersea ruler.
When washed up on the surface, she meets a male human and wants to be full-human as well.
Her father, however, disapproves of her desire and says that the sea is her home.
But much against her father's command, she becomes human and goes off to be with the boy she met anyway.
The two grow even closer together while in a small boat.
There are two other pieces of evidence, but if you've seen both films, you'll definitely know what they are. So was Ponyo really based off of The Little Mermaid? The world may never know…
