Gail watches as Mrs. Calloway stops the young pigs from fighting with Jeb over a can as she tells Crystal that she wants to do something new and different as she is bored with farm life on Patch of Heaven like having her own house on the farm. Mrs. Calloway eavesdrops and tells her that if she's ever going to inherit the farm one day she has to learn how to run it with order and prim to Gail's displeasure and continues back to work with Grace offering encouragement. Later, Maggie moves in an Gail is in awe of her and joins her in playing with her with some of the food she harvested to Mrs. Calloway's disgust. Gail expresses her new friendship with Maggie singing "Anytime You Need A Friend".

When Gail learns from her childhood friend Deputy Byron Paddington that the bank has threatened to auction off the farm if Pearl cannot come up with $750 within three days; Gail, Mrs. Calloway and Grace get talked into entering themselves with Maggie in a show at the town fair in an attempt to win prize money. Gail excited to try immediately agrees and goes with Maggie, Mrs. Calloway and Grace while riding Crystal to town.

In town, the cows accidentally go to a saloon when they get scared by sounds, mistaking them for a gunfight, and make a huge mess there while Gail is afraid to help them watches from the entrance. After being kicked out, they meet Deputy Byron and Buck, Sheriff Sam Brown's horse, and Gail learns from Maggie that a reward is being offered for the capture of Alameda Slim which she was also excited to try, which would provide enough money to save the farm, and tries convincing her fellow cows to help her, but Mrs. Calloway disagrees. Gail and Crystal watch in shock as Maggie and Mrs. Calloway get in a fight with Maggie after the latter knocks Mrs. Calloway's hat off, which lands in the mud. Sheriff Sam Brown soon breaks up the fight by tying all three bovines up to a wagon that went to a ranch with Gail and Crystal tagging along behind. On the way there, the cows pass by Maggie's old home, which has been auctioned off to a Mr. Yancy O'Del. Gail, Mrs. Calloway and Grace learn that Alameda Slim, a notorious cattle wrestler, stole all of the cattle, and Maggie was only spared because she had been locked in the barn after winning a show. Gail shows Maggie some sympathy as Maggie tells her that she doesn't want Gail going through what she went through since she grew close to Gail.

Gail and the three cows hide at the ranch filled with longhorn steers in an attempt to catch Slim. However, they soon discover how Slim is able to steal the cows: his yodeling puts the cows into a trance and follow him. Both Mrs. Calloway and Maggie are entranced, but Grace is unaffected, due to being tone deaf, Gail and Crystal roll the wagon with Grace on it to awaken the other two and saves them from being taken. Bryon shows up to bring Gail and the cows back home after learning of Gail's intentions to catch Slim but refuses as she still intends to find Slim. When Buck decides to capture Slim himself, Gail and the cows and now Bryon joining the group after losing his horse; follow his trail in an attempt to pass him, but lose the trail in a downpour. This leads to a fallout between Maggie and Mrs. Calloway, who accuses Maggie of dragging her and Grace along for a personal vendetta. Gail angered at Calloway confesses that she's done listening to her and wants to choose what she wants since she never always did get what she wanted on the farm and refuses to return home. After the argument, Bryon comforts her and he confesses that her heart was in the right place to save her home and friends then falls asleep against Crystal.

The next morning, Gail, Byron and and the cows meet Lucky Jack, a jackrabbit who lost a foot to a lucky charm. After learning that Lucky Jack lost his former home, an old mine, to Alameda Slim, Gail asks the rabbit to take them to it with Maggie striking a deal with Mrs. Calloway that she'll leave when they succeed to Gail's dismay but Maggie assures her it'll be okay since Maggie is doing it for Gail only. Gail and her friends stop for a while one night as Bryon tells Gail he will be with her and apologizes for doubting her earlier which she forgives. They both dance during the "Wherever the Trail May Lead" segment as they express their love for each other with a near kiss until they realize their friends were watching to their embarrassment and continue to Echo Mine. Gail and the cows form a plan to capture Slim. At Grace's suggestion, Gail helps Mrs. Calloway and Maggie don earplugs so that Slim's yodeling does not affect them as Byron tells Gail not to be afriad to attack Slim. When Maggie and Gail sneak up to catch Slim they are caught as they are saved by Grace and Mrs. Calloway. Gail, Byron and the cows are able to capture Slim, and flee on a steam train, with Slim's accomplices and buyer in close pursuit of them. However, after they crash into a train, Slim captures Gail and her friends as Byron was captured by Rico, a fake bounty hunter who secretly works for Slim to Bryon and Gail's horror. Alameda Slim dons his alter ego, Mr. Yancy O'del, and plans on attending the auction of Patch of Heaven and orders Wesley and the Willies to kill Gail and Byron. However Gail and the others free themselves thanks to Buck for changing his ways after Rico's betrayal. They use the train to follow him and Gail was able to stop Slim from shooting her friends, then Slim attempts to kill Gail but is saved by her farm friends. Gail and the animals work together to fight Slim and then Gail has Mrs. Calloway expose Slim's identity to the Sheriff and Pearl, who are both shocked that the auctioneer who is buying the farm is Alameda Slim, resulting in his arrest and vows revenge against Gail and her friends. Gail and her friends are hailed as heroes and the farm is saved by the prize money as Gail and Bryon share their first kiss.

When Gail, Mrs. Calloway and Grace thought Maggie left the farm for good, they start to miss her and begin saying nice things about her. However, it is revealed that Maggie did not leave and decided to stay in Patch of Heaven after she heard Gail, Mrs. Calloway and Grace say nice things about her. Gail wants Maggie to be part of their family as Mrs. Calloway allows her to stay to Gail's delight. Gail and the three cows, along with all the other farm animals, live a happy life on Little Patch of Heaven. After the farm was saved the cows won the county fair, Gail and Byron were married and were surprised by Pearl and Sam who also married a nice new house of their own on the farm.
