I absolutely understand why many people were most likely dissatisfied with the new incarnation of the Mistress of All Evil herself, Maleficent, in the 2014 film of the same name, and that they believe that it's inferior to the original 1959 classic. However, in my honest opinion, I kind of like the 2014 incarnation of Maleficent a little bit more than the 1959 incarnation of her. Here's why:
- More personality: While I do enjoy the original Maleficent for being hammishly evil, this was also my main problem with her as well. To be honest, she didn't have much of a personality to speak of. She committed all of these heinous acts in the film, and we're never given a reason as to why she does what she does, other than the fact that it's just evil. The 2014 Maleficent, on the other hand, has more personality. She's shown as being angsty and tragic, and it's also shown that she ultimately cared for Aurora and truly wanted to remove the spell that was inflicted on her and at the end, she stops being evil and redeems herself. She's also shown as not being an awful boss to the fairies or Dival, her right-hand man.
- A Clear Motivation: Unlike the original Maleficent, the 2014 version of this character had a clear reason for being evil. The original never stated why Maleficent cursed Aurora to die at a young age. All that you have to go by is the possibility that she was mad that she wasn't invited to the baby shower, or you may also have to go by the fact that she's simply evil, and that she cursed her for no reason other than because she could. The 2014 Maleficent is depicted as a tragic figure who was so absorbed with hatred and vengeance that she didn't realize that she was heading towards a path of destruction, and that once she did, she stopped playing the role of the bad guy and goes back to being a hero.
However, with those two points, there are some criticisms that I had with the new Maleficent. For example we never learn anything more about her back story. True, she had more of a back story unlike the original incarnation of her, the only problem is that we don't know why she's larger than the other fairies that resided in the forests, or who her parents were. We also never learn why she has horns, and how her parents died.
Despite these criticisms, however, I can still honestly say that I preferred the 2014 version of Maleficent over the 1959 version of her. What did you guys think about her?
