Tui and Sina are characters in the upcoming Disney animated feature film Moana. They are the parents of the film's protagonist, Moana.
Background
Tui is the chief of the people of the island of Motunui, and Sina is his wife. They both have mixed opinions regarding their daughter's desire to leave the island and explore the ocean; Tui is aquaphobic, to the point of prohibiting the people of Motunui from venturing beyond the island’s outer reef[1], while Sina is more supportive, and tries to balance the conflicting tension between her husband and daughter.
Despite his concern towards Moana's love for the sea, Tui sees greatness in his daughter; he pressures her to follow his footsteps by becoming chief once his time as ruler comes to an end. In a culture where sea exploration is controversial, this forces Moana to choose between her dream of becoming a wayfinder, and staying true to her people and culture by leading the village. Sina trusts that her daughter will make the right choice.[2]
