"The Trial" is the second segment of the ninth episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

In a school court trial, Spinelli and Randall battle it out in court after Randall accuses her of throwing a rock during a dirt-clod war; If found guilt, the students will give Spinelli a "Swirly".

Plot[]

The kids are having a mud war with one another and getting messy when they hear someone crying in pain. They discover Randall with his head having been hit by a rock. When he comes to, he blames Spinelli for it. Spinelli outright denies the accusation, but refuses to divulge her alibi. When they get to the school the next day, Spinelli becomes a pariah and accuses Randall of fibbing on her. The students demand that Spinelli be given a "swirly", but King Bob intervenes and suggests that Spinelli be put on trial instead. He has Gretchen, whom he deems as the smartest kid in the school, to represent Randall, much to her surprise, but he is unmoved by her pleas.

On the day of the trial, Randall tells his story. He claims that he was being heroic on the mud battle field when he was hit by a "cowardly" Spinelli. When he went to confront her, she retaliated by throwing a rock at his head. T.J. points out that no one else was there, so no one can blame Spinelli, but Mikey is brought in as the next witness. He saw Spinelli confront Randall through a fence and ran around in an attempt to stop her, but he heard a thud and a scream and was too late. Believing this to be undeniable prove of Spinelli's guilt, the children demand her guilty. T.J. finally convinces Spinelli reveal her side of the story to save her life.

Spinelli reveals that she did face off against Randall, but she was distracted by a cat in a tree and climbed up to save it. To her astonishment, the cat belonged to Miss Finster who thanked Spinelli and told her that she owed her one. The students are confused by the story, but Randall cracks and corroborates it, admitting that he was jealous that Spinelli got a thank you from Miss Finster. He picked up a rock, threw it in the air and let it hit him on the head before blaming Spinelli. Spinelli is cleared of all charges while Randall is chased by the students in an effort to give a swirly.
