"The Quest for Varian" is the nineteenth episode of Tangled: The Series. It premiered on December 9, 2017.

Plot

Rapunzel has a happy dream about her helping her father with decorating the castle, which suddenly turns into a nightmare about her hair, the Black Rocks, and Varian. She wakes up to find herself hanging in midair. She tells her friends about it, and believes that like before they are telling her something. She was not sure what, but she believed what she saw in her dreams were in someway connected, and she needed to find out how. She speaks to her father about it, who awkwardly tells her the rocks have been removed from Old Corona. Either way, Rapunzel is relieved that her father has handled the situation, and they move onto other things, like planning her upcoming birthday party.

While taking a walk to her statue with Eugene and Cassandra, Rapunzel discovers a lantern similar to the one she saw in her dreams. She finds a note and a key tied to it from Varian, saying he may have uncovered the mystery of the Black Rocks, and needs her help. The note also reads that he needs Rapunzel to find the bronze graphtyc in his lab, and to be on the alert for people who are out to stop her. Rapunzel, accompanied by Eugene, Cassandra, Pascal, Maximus, and Owl, journeys to Old Corona, and discovers the village is still overgrown by the Black Rocks. This makes everyone suspect that King Frederic lied to Rapunzel. As they walk to Varian's house, the discover the condition of the rocks has gotten even worse. The village looks deserted, and little do they that they are being shadowed. Rapunzel had to be careful not the touch the rocks with her hair, otherwise she could trigger another shock wave like before. After getting through the maze of rocks, Rapunzel, Eugene, and Cassandra make it Varian's house. They make it to Varian's lab, and soon find the graphtyc inside one of Varian's books. On the way out, they discover Varian's father encased in the rocks. Devastated, Rapunzel believes that she is to blame for what is happening, and probably would have been better off if she stayed in the castle. Suddenly, they are caught off guard a man in a gray helmet and cloak, who wants the graphtyc. They fight him off and escape back the way they came. They become cornered by more of those gray helmeted men, but are saved by Maximus. Rapunzel, Eugene, and Cassandra jump on Maximus, and ride off back to the castle. However, after considering they might not make it back with those guys after them, they decide to retreat to a hiding place instead. Rapunzel suggests going back to the tower, where the rocks have also sprouted.

By night, Rapunzel is still trying to figure out the mystery of the graphtyc. Noticing there is something inside it, both Rapunzel and Cassandra try to force it open. Remembering the key that came with Varian's note, Rapunzel uses it to open the graphtyc, revealing inside an ancient scroll. Just then, Eugene spots those cloaked men outside and climbing up the tower. Rapunzel is done running from these guys, and decides to take care of them once and for all. She lets her hair down, allowing it to touch the rocks. The result triggers a shock wave, which blasts the men off the tower. However, more rocks start to rapidly sprout up the tower. Rapunzel, Cassandra, Eugene, Pascal, Maxiumus, and Owl retreat to the roof as the tower breaks up. With nowhere to go, Rapunzel uses her hair to erect a shield around herself and the others, as they jump from the tower. They make it down safely, just as the rocks completely disintegrate the tower.

Rapunzel, Eugene, and Cassandra later discover that the cloaked men are actually the Captain and the guards. They were ordered by King Frederic to ensure Rapunzel never reassembled the scroll. She has a look at the scroll, which reveals that the rocks may have been caused by the drop of moonlight, with reference to the Magical Golden Flower which came from the drop of sunlight. However, further information on the rocks is vague, since the lower portion of the scroll is missing. Angry that her father had lied to her, Rapunzel intends to confront him and get some real answers.
