During the development of the third film installment of The Little Mermaid franchise, prior to it being made into The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning, the original concept featured a far different opening that implied that it was supposed to take place some time after the first film and possibly the second film. The storyboard animation was done by Tod Carter.
Ariel and Sebastian are accompanying Eric on a vessel in treacherous waters. Ariel and Sebastian enter a brief discussion, with Sebastian clearly being irritated at having to contend with a parrot that acted as his superior, and having to locate a white whale. Eric jumps in and asks if anyone was feeling crabby, causing Ariel to scowl at Eric.
