"The Legend" is an episode of Wander Over Yonder.

Synopsis[]

Wander and Sylvia save a group of kids from a Lord Dominator invasion as the kids tell stories about a familiar mythic hero.

Plot[]

On a planet being destroyed by Lord Dominator, a small alien girl named Angela goes rummaging through her home and finds her favorite toy; a stuffed doll version of Sylvia. She is joined by her older sister Melodie and their friends the two headed Hank and David and the small fuzzy Jamie. They end up missing the last escape pod from their planet and panic, but Melodie reminds them that they will be rescued by "The Hero" who always comes to save the day.

At that moment, Wander and Sylvia show up telling the kids that they need to leave, despite their belief that the hero will arrive. Nevertheless, they whisk the children away, via Orbble juice, and the children regale the stories of the Hero. As it goes along, it quickly becomes apparent that they are talking about Wander and Sylvia who throughout the episode are amused and confused by the descriptions the children give them.

David starts off by explaining how the hero is a giant who once stopped Lord Hater by picking him up and squeezing him tightly until he fell apart. Hank tells how the hero, a guitar riding, joke spewing, cool guy, once stopped Major Threat by annoying the heck out of him and farting in his face. The two headed brothers argue back and forth until Jamie gives her interpretation. The hero is a curious childlike individual who does not fight, but instead as a giant robot named Silver 7 who does the fighting for him.

Melodie tells the children that they are all wrong that she knows the truth about who the hero actually is. The hero is a traveling "star nomad" who wandered away from his people and found a box that unleashed an evil presence into the world. The evil possessed his father, turning him into Lord Hater. This caused great guilt in him and he has been forced to wander the galaxy, unaware that Lord Dominator is his sister. Additionally, he is possessed by a spirit of a wolf that will overtake him and the only thing that will save him is his true love: a space angel. Everyone is disgusted by this explanation, but Melodie continues with an overly complex story that bores everyone.

Eventually, Dominator's robots arrive on the new planet they are on and Wander and Sylvia send the kids away as one of their escape pods flies overhead. As Wander and Sylvia fight off the robots, Angela looks back and realizes that Wander and Sylvia are the heroes the other kids were talking about and happily hugs her doll as she enters the escape pod. Wander jokingly calls Sylvia Silver 7 as they run away from the robots.

Trivia[]

  • The idea for this episode was inspired by a Batman comic known as The Batman Nobody Knows and was put down under 4 segments each with an opportunity to explore different visual styles for each story. The first segment, which was told from Hank, came from James W. Suhr which shows a sketchbook kind of art style, the second, from Jamie, came from Justin Nichols which was more of a radical art style depicting Wander as a stereotypical "cool guy", the third, being David's story, came from Ben Balistreri which was close to the old anime shows like Astro Boy, and the last one, which was Melodie's story, came from ND Stevenson, who not only worked on Season 2 for the series but also made the familiar art-style as his graphic novel Nimona to fit Melodie's story.[1]
  • During the second segment, he splats Major Threat and Cooler DJ Wander repeatedly says "mustard or mayo", making this the fifth time this phrase is said ("The Picnic", "The Good Bad Guy", "The Hole...Lotta Nuthin'", "My Fair Hatey").
  • Melodie mentions Wander's species is a "star nomad", which is a fanmade term given to his species by fans. This episode also shows how other members of Wander's species could look like, at least in Melode's portrayal.
  • Silver7 is a reference to one the very first Mecha manga/animes, which has established many genre rules and cliches still in use even today.

Continuity[]

  • The first three stories told by the children are all references to previous episodes, the first being a retelling of "The Greatest", the second possibly hinting at how Wander was able to reform Major Threat, as implied in "The Good Bad Guy", and the third summarizing the events of "The Party Animal".
