On March 18, 2014, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Pixar had begun pre-production on The Incredibles 2 and Cars 3[1] with The Incredibles director Brad Bird working on the story[2] but no one yet confirmed as director.[3] Later that month, Samuel L. Jackson told Digital Spy that he would likely reprise his role as Frozone in the sequel.[4] In April 2015, Bird revealed to NPR that he has begun writing the screenplay for the sequel.[5] In May 2015, Bird confirmed that the Incredibles sequel would be his next film following Tomorrowland.[6] He also stated that the movie will not reflect trends in the superhero genre since the first film's release, explaining, "I don't think that kind of idea stays interesting for very long. ...
For me, the interesting thing was never the superhero part of it. It was
more the family dynamic, and how do superhero things play into that."[7]
According to the 2015 São Paulo Disney Expo, the film was implied to be released in 2019, fifteen years after the original.[8] It was later confirmed for released on June 21, 2019.[9] Bird later confirmed on Twitter that Michael Giacchino will return as the composer.[10]
The Incredibles 2 is the first Pixar sequel directed by Brad Bird and will be the first offical Pixar sequel to focus soley on a human cast.
The Incredibles 2 will be the second Pixar sequel to be scored by Michael Giacchino, with the first being Cars 2.
It will also be the first Pixar sequel to a film he has previously scored.
The Incredibles 2's 15-year gap (between the original film and sequel) is the longest waiting time for a Disney/Pixar sequel (with Finding Dory's 13-year gap being the second longest), the 15 year waiting gap is a direct reference to the original film's 15 year later setting.
