THX is a company located in San Francisco, California. It develops audio/visual reproduction standards for movie theaters, home theater systems, video game consoles and other products.
THX has its beginnings in 1983, as a sound system developed by Lucasfilm in 1983, and first utilized in Return of the Jedi. In 2002, THX spun off into its own company, which was owned by Creative Technology Limited. In 2016, THX was acquired by Razer Inc.
Many videocassettes, laserdiscs, and DVDs from Buena Vista Home Entertainment released between 1997 to 2006 were THX-cerrified, and featured a variation of their iconic "Broadway" trailer (albeit pitch-shifted) before the feature presentation.
