This article is about the weapon used by Prince Phillip. For other uses, see Sword (disambiguation).
The Sword of Truth is the second of two magic weapons (the other being the Shield of Virtue) bestowed upon Prince Phillip by Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. It is the weapon responsible for the death of Maleficent.
Background
Physical appearance
The Sword of Truth is a moderately-sized double-edged broad- or long weapon. It would be difficult to distinguish from other such swords were it not for its exceptional quality and craftspersonship. However, it is enchanted and enhanced by the fairies so that it possesses amazing magical properties.
Abilities
The Sword of Truth is one of supernatural sharpness which enables it to cut through thick briars in a single blow and even pierce dragon skin. It seems never to dull, no matter how often it is used for such a purpose. The fairies' final enchantment also permits the Sword to be used as a throwing weapon and inflict immediate death upon its target in a single strike. This final enchantment is bestowed with the phrase:
- “"Sword of Truth, fly swift and sure, That Evil die and Good endure!"”
- ―Flora's casting
It is immediately following this that Prince Phillip hurls the sword into the heart of Maleficent, slaying her instantly.
