"Sunquake" is the fifty-second regular episode of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.

Synopsis[]

Evil Buzz takes up the alias of Shiv Katall and starts stealing high tech stuff. On closer inspection, Buzz and Mira find that there is a ship close to the sun and evil Buzz is involved with Gravitina, who intends to destroy everything with solar flares.

Plot[]

Team Lightyear discover that someone is using Buzz's old alias as Shiv Katall to steal valuable high tech stuff. When they discover it to be Buzz's evil counterpart from an alternate dimension that they had defeated previously following his alliance with their Emperor Zurg, Team Lightyear attempt to pursue him near a large star, but Star Cruiser 42 is unable to pursue due to the extreme heat damaging the ship by flying so close to the star's surface. As a result, sporting thermal suits similar to what Buzz used when dealing with the Independent Thinker L.G.M.'s Flux Gravity Capacitor, Buzz and Mira discover a hidden space station where they find not just Evil Buzz, but Gravitina as well, having teamed up with Evil Buzz with the intent to use her gravity manipulation powers to launch solar flares at Star Command and Capital Planet to destroy them and anything else Evil Buzz thinks is worthy of destruction.

Buzz and Mira are dumped off the station to burn up in the star, but Mira ghosts herself out of her suit and into Buzz for protection before they can get back aboard the station to try and stop Gravitina and Evil Buzz. In the meantime, Gravitina launches the first volley at Star Command and Capital Planet, and while Commander Nebula orders the fleet to engage and destroy the solar flares with the laser drills on the Star Cruisers, one large flare has to be destroyed by ramming a Star Cruiser into it, though the Rangers aboard set the autopilot and abandon ship beforehand. Another flare heads straight for a supertanker, and when Booster and XR warn the alien driver of his imminent doom, he's unable to start the engines to get out of harm's way, as he's on full tanks of chemicals. Booster launches from 42 to save the driver, while following the impact and explosion, Booster, XR, and the driver find that where the supertanker was, there was now a large, frozen snowflake, as the driver confesses that he was only carrying water on board, so the threat wasn't as serious as they thought, though the driver admits that the snowflake is pretty to look at. Unfortunately, despite Star Command and the Space Rangers' best efforts, one solar flare gets through and heads for Capital Planet, impacting close to the main courtyard and setting off a large fire.

Back with Buzz and Mira, they get back aboard the station, but as they try to stop Gravitina and Evil Buzz, to fool them, Buzz sends his own thermal suit out on one of their smaller craft they entered the station with earlier, and Gravitina destroys it with a solar flare, convincing them that Buzz is dead and nothing can stop them now. Just as they plan to attack Mira's home planet of Tangea next, the alarm sounds to warn them that the stabilizer keeping their station in orbit is about to self-destruct, before Buzz and Mira appear, alive and well, and Buzz gives a good punch to his evil self. Gravitina pleads with Buzz to stop the self-destruct of the stabilizer or they will all perish, but Buzz decrees that it is a small price to pay for the good of the many to protect the Galactic Alliance. The stabilizer soon self-destructs, and with the station going into freefall caught in the star's gravity well, Buzz and Mira attempt to abandon ship in Shiv's cruiser, but are stopped by Gravitina and Evil Buzz. Buzz fights his evil counterpart while Mira fights Gravitina, managing to break her concentration, before both are buried under a large pile of debris. Gravitina is able to pull herself out and call on Buzz for help, but while Buzz goes to help her with Mira, Evil Buzz decides to save himself, but the floor of the docking bay gives way, and he apparently falls to his death in the star. Despite Buzz wanting to rescue him, Mira convinces him it's too late, and grabbing Gravitina and helping her into Shiv's cruiser, they attempt to escape. Though they get out of the station in time before it fully explodes, the damage to Shiv's cruiser is too heavy, and they are in danger of being pulled back into the star by its gravity well. Luckily, Booster and XR arrive in 42 to help them, and with some aid from Gravitina upon realizing she has to do something to save all of them, Buzz, Mira, and Gravitina make it safely onto 42 before the Star Cruiser is able to retreat safely back to Star Command while Shiv's cruiser is destroyed.

Once safely back at Star Command, Gravitina, now in cuffs and with her head encased in a steel-reinforced helmet with a keypad lock to prevent use of her powers, is being escorted away by a pair of Space Ranger robot guards, but not before thanking Buzz for saving her life and suggesting that if he grows some facial hair, it might improve her attraction to him by the time she makes parole. After she's taken away, Buzz goes to the command center to check with Team Lightyear on the fate of his evil self, but despite their assurances that the Evil Buzz is flambé, Buzz still has a gut feeling that if anyone could survive what happened, it's him.

And indeed, Evil Buzz is seen flying away from the star thanks to a spare rocket engine, with a wicked smile on his face...
