Stephen Lawrence Schwartz is an American musical theatre lyricist and composer. He has worked as lyricist of Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Enchanted, all three with Alan Menken composing. He also wrote and composed the theme song for the Playhouse Disney series Johnny and the Sprites as well as the song "Brightly Shining" from the series and "Waiting for the Stars" from the show's original shorts.
Schwartz is also known for his role as the writer and composer for the songs of hit Broadway musicals such as Godspell and Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz.
Schwartz also wrote and composed songs for the film Mulan, but these were not used due to his decision to continue with his work on the DreamWorks film The Prince of Egypt. Despite this, one of these songs, "Written in Stone", was later used for the children's theatre production Mulan Jr. Schwartz's breakup from Disney for this reason meant that he would not work for the studio for nearly nine years, prior to his return with Johnny and the Sprites.[1]
