Scrooge and the Golden Eggs is Volume 5 of the Mickey's Young Readers Library. It is an adaptation of the Aesop fable The Goose and the Golden Eggs starring Scrooge McDuck.

Synopsis[]

Huey, Dewey, and Louie see Donald bringing a goose that he has bought for Grandma Duck and point out how it looks like the goose that laid the golden eggs from Jack and the Beanstalk. Scrooge, overhearing their conversation, believes that maybe the goose Donald has bought can actually lay golden eggs, so he offers to buy it from him, offering him twice the amount he originally paid for it. Donald is puzzled as to why Scrooge would pay him more than what the goose was worth, but he accepts the offer and buys two new geese to give to Grandma.

After Scrooge returns home with the goose, he tries to make the goose lay eggs, but nothing happens, so he calls Grandma for advice on how to make the goose lay eggs. She suggests making sure the goose is not too cold, not too hot, not too hungry, and also giving it lots of exercise. However, when Scrooge tries all of these methods, the goose still does not lay any eggs. Finally, he tries reading Jack and the Beanstalk and loudly commanding the goose to start laying eggs, but he only succeeds in scaring the goose away. Donald then comes by to ask how things are going with the goose, and Scrooge complains that he couldn't get it to lay a single golden egg. Donald responds by pointing out that real geese don't actually lay golden eggs, which causes Scrooge to realize how foolish he's been.
