"Schoolworld" is the first segment of the forty-fifth episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

The school gets a new technology system installed called the SAL 3000 which controls everything.

Plot[]

When Gretchen notes that the school's clock is a couple of seconds slow and thus has resulted in them collectively losing days of recess, Spinelli angrily tosses a ball at the clock and destroys it, much to the other kids delight. Contrary to Miss Finster's emotions, Principal Prickly is glad that the clock was destroyed as it allows for him to install SAL 3000, an AI that can take care of all the school's functions. Everyone, especially Gretchen, is very supportive of the new system until Gus misses the bell and is locked out by SAL.

Despite Gus' concerns, Gretchen insists that SAL was simply doing what he was programmed to do and that he should have been more cautious of the time. Soon, everyone in school starts to experience SAL glitching and restricting everyone across the playground and even faculty. HAL suspects that the Recess Gang is plotting against him and tries and fails to lock them out of the school. After Prickly attempts to calm everyone down, SAL performs an override against the entire school and traps the teachers before belittling Gretchen's intellect.

Motivated to act, Gretchen has the students distract HAL while she and the Gang escape through the vents to reach SAL's control room. Together, the Gang turn off all of Sal's function as he slowly sings himself to sleep. The school is restored to its original functions as Gretchen admits that while she loves technology, she will stick to puppy as man's best friend. Despite acknowledging the failure of SAL 3000, Prickly informs Finster that he is already going to implement a SAL 4000 in the near future.

Trivia[]

  • In the episode "Recess is Cancelled", the Secretary of Education says that a SAL 9000 is making a choice. The episode took place before "Schoolworld", so, either SAL 3000 is an old technology or that it was a goof. In the episode "Terrifying Tales of Recess", SAL 4000 is used, and is also mentioned at the end of this episode. So, it is most probably a goof.
  • SAL 3000 is a parody of HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey and even lifts moments from the film.
  • The title of the episode is a reference to the film Westworld.
