Ricky Dene Gervais is an English actor, voice actor, comedian, singer, musician, writer, director, and former radio personality. He is best known for hosting his self-titled animated talk show The Ricky Gervais Show. He is also well-known for his various film roles, such as Dr. McPhee in the Night at the Museum film trilogy, Bertram Pincus in the 2008 fantasy comedy film Ghost Town, Len Taylor in the 2010 comedy-drama film Cemetery Junction, and as the voice of Argonaut in Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. Additionally, he served as a writer for several British sitcoms, such as The Office, Extras, An Idiot Abroad, and Life's Too Short, as well as made special guest appearances on Sesame Street with certain Muppets, including Elmo and Grover.

For Disney, he voiced Bugsy in the 2005 Disney animated featured film Valiant. He was also set to make a cameo in the 2011 musical comedy film The Muppets, although his scene was cut from the final theatrical film. However, he starred in its sequel as Dominic Badguy (a.k.a. Number Two). Additionally, he played Daniel Ryan in the ABC TV show Alias and Xanax in Galavant.

Gervais was born at Battle Hospital in Reading, Berkshire. His father, Lawrence Raymond "Jerry" Gervais, a Franco-Ontarian of French-Canadian and Iroquois descent raised on a farm in Pain Court, Ontario, near London, Ontario, emigrated to the UK whilst on foreign duty during World War II. He worked as a laborer and hod carrier before he met Gervais' English mother, Eva Sophia (née House). They met during a blackout and settled in Whitley in Reading, having four children over a 16 year period. Eva died at age 74 of lung cancer. Ricky, the youngest child, has three older siblings: schoolteacher Larry, Marsha, a teacher for special needs children, and painter/decorator Bob. Prompted by Bob, Gervais began to question the existence of God from about age eight.
