Dr. René Emile Belloq was a French archaeologist, and a longtime rival of Indiana Jones.
Belloq was born into a wealthy family of winemakers in Marseilles, France. He attended the Sorbonne, where he met Henry Jones Jr., a fellow archaeology student. Belloq took advantage of Jones from the start, plagiarizing the American's thesis paper on stratigraphy and winning the Archeological Society Prize for "his" work. The two would meet again several times throughout their careers, with Belloq always gaining the upper hand by any means necessary.
