"Never Give a Gummi an Even Break" is the forty-eighth episode of the Adventures of the Gummi Bears. It premiered on January 6, 1990, and is the ninth and final episode of the fifth season. Due to this episode running only the length of a half-episode segment, it was subsequently paired with "Friar Tum", a half-episode segment from the following season, effectively becoming part of the sixth season for reruns, as well as for international airings.
Plot[]
Grammi finds what seems to be a Gummi that is a side show, and takes him home to Gummi Glen, but Gruffi thinks there is something wrong with this bear. Is Gruffi correct, or have they found another Gummi Bear?
Cast[]
- Corey Burton as Gruffi Gummi
- Townsend Coleman as Carney the Elf
- Barry Dennen as Carney's Assistant
- June Foray as Grammi Gummi
- Katie Leigh as Sunni Gummi
- Noelle North as Cubbi Gummi
- Paul Winchell as Zummi Gummi
Trivia[]
- The episode title echoes the title of the 1941 W.C. Fields film Never Give a Sucker an Even Break.
- Tummi Gummi appears throughout the episode, but does not have any lines. Though his mouth is seen moving with the other Gummies when Carney forces them to sing, Lorenzo Music does not provide a voice.
- Grammi's human disguise mask resembles her voice actor June Foray's face in a cartoonified way.
- This is the final episode in which Zummi Gummi is voiced by Paul Winchell prior to his retirement, though the previous episode's lines were his last lines recorded for the character.
- This is also the last episode of the show animated exclusively by the Tokyo-based studio Walt Disney Animation Japan, Inc. (which itself was spun off from TMS Entertainment beginning with season five), before production was distributed to Guimaraes Productions in Brazil for the episode "Friar Tum", and to Walt Disney Television Animation Australia for eight other episodes of the sixth and final season. Notable exceptions being the episodes "Toadie the Conqueror", "Zummi in Slumberland", "Once More, the Crimson Avenger", "A Recipe for Trouble", "True Gritty", "Tummi Trouble", "Trading Faces", and "Wings Over Dunwyn", which were produced under the Walt Disney Animation Japan, Inc. banner, but actually animated by Hanho Heung-Up Co., Ltd and/or Taesang Ind. Co., Ltd (both located in South Korea), the episode "Thornberry to the Rescue", which is also credited to Walt Disney Animation Japan, Inc. but clearly differs in style, and "King Igthorn, Part II", which was partly animated by Jade Animation Productions Limited in China.
- * This is originally the twenty-fifth episode to premiere separately from its sibling segment, which would air the following season, a little over eight months later. Both segments were later combined for all subsequent airings; though the episode order was flipped. Internationally, the sixth season follows an entirely different order (likely generally following the intended production order more closely, with this episode marking an exception).
