Mel Colm-Cille Gerard Gibson, AO (born January 3, 1956) is an Australian-American actor, film director, producer, and screenwriter who is best known for his roles as Max Rockatansky in the Mad Max films and as Martin Riggs in the Lethal Weapon films. He is also known for his role as William Wallace in the 1995 epic historical drama film Braveheart, a film which he also directed and produced.

He is known in Disney for voicing John Smith in the 1995 Disney animated film, Pocahontas. Due to a busy schedule Mel was unable to reprise the role for the 1998 sequel Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, in which he was replaced by his younger brother Donal Gibson.
