"Makeover" is the twelfth episode of The Proud Family.

Synopsis[]

Summary[]

Penny, Dijonay, and LaCienega turn Zoey into the perfect date, but will they be able to do the same with Olay Gross? Meanwhile, BeBe and CeCe get their pictures taken, but end up in a baby diaper commercial thanks to Oscar.

Plot[]

This episode starts with Zoey getting a makeover from Penny, Dijonay, and LaCienega. Zoey wanted a makeover so she could look pretty for the upcoming school dance. After a change of clothes and adding some accessories, the girls declare Zoe's makeover a success, and Zoey seems to agree.

Meanwhile, the rest of the family is sitting down to breakfast. Trudy takes Oscar aside to talk to him. She tells him that she set an appointment to have BeBe and CeCe's pictures taken. Oscar asks why Suga Mama can't do it, since she did the pictures last year. Trudy shows him a reel of unfocused photos, and insists they pay a professional. Oscar is not willing to pay, and Suga Mama says she is happy to take the pictures. She pulls out a very old camera, and asks everyone to gather for a family portrait. Penny comes downstairs, and upon seeing what is happening, tries to leave for school. Suga Mama encourages her to stay and sets up a barnyard backdrop. She clicks the shutter button, but the resulting flash powder explosion gives the rest of the family perfect cover to run away.

At school, Zoey takes her new look for a test drive. She quickly gets the attention of several boys. This makes LaCienega upset. Penny and Dijonay tell her that it is not a big deal, but Dijonay changes her mind when Sticky starts chatting up Zoey. Zoey approaches the girls, saying that her new look isn't having the desired effect. She says that she isn't interested in the random boys (and definitely is not interested in Sticky). The boy she is after is a handsome Russian exchange student named Sergei. Their conversation is interrupted by the Gross Sisters. Nubia figures since Penny made a "twig" like Zoey pretty, she could do better with a "mighty oak" like Olay. She adds Olay wants the makeover, so boys will ask her to the dance. Penny agrees, especially under the condition that the Gross sisters will beat her up if Olay doesn't look good. Penny's friends promptly flee once her back is turned.

At the photo studio, Oscar and Trudy arrive with the twins. Oscar is still skeptical, saying that the photographer is a rip-off artist. The photographer, who was within earshot, assures the Prouds that he only produces top-quality work. He gets the babies into position, but they won't stop crying. Trudy tells Oscar to do his "chicken dance" to make the babies smile. Reluctantly, he does, and it works. The photographer snaps some pictures, then asks Oscar and Trudy if they ever considered putting Bebe and Cece in show business. Trudy declines, but Oscar is all too eager to accept. The photographer tells them that there will be auditions for a commercial that needs a baby. He then says that the only way they will have a shot at the role is if they purchase more headshots and portraits. Trudy is angry that Oscar is falling for this racket, but Oscar says Trudy will thank him later once the twins are famous.

At the mall, Penny and Olay finally find Zoey, Dijonay, and LaCienega. Penny tells them that she needs their help, but they all refuse, stating that Nubia asked Penny alone to do it. Penny then uses Olay's size to coerce her friends into helping. The girls teach Olay manners, poise, and better posture. Then, they buy her some new clothes, lipstick, and a new hairstyle. At the end of the montage, Penny unveils the new Olay. The girls admire their work, and Olay gives Penny a bone-crushing hug as a thank-you. Later, the girls show Olay to Nubia and Gina. Nubia hates Olay's new look and is ready to beat up Penny. Zoey intervenes, saying that they must put Olay to the "mall test." If boys at the mall approach her and flirt with her, the makeover was a success. Nubia agrees, and says that if Olay doesn't pass the test, she is beating everyone up. They go to the food court, and Nubia tells Olay to sit at a table. At first, it doesn't seem to work. Nubia is ready to hurt someone, but soon enough, boys start surrounding Olay. Penny smugly tells Nubia, "You're welcome," and goes to sit with Olay.

At the diaper commercial auditions, Trudy is still unsure of putting the twins into show business. Oscar counters that twins are popular on TV, and this will be worth it once the twins get the role. Trudy goes to sign in. Oscar tries reading a book on how to be successful in show business, but a familiar voice mocks him. The Red-Nosed Baby from Spelling Bee sits in a stroller nearby, and tells Oscar that he is also here to audition for the commercial. The baby adds that he has been in commercials since he was 5 days old, and is a multilingual crier. Oscar prepares to remove the twins' competition from the lobby, but Trudy approaches excitedly. She says that the producer immediately hired the twins upon seeing them. Oscar gloats to the smart baby, then tries getting him to talk to Trudy. The baby only babbles at Trudy, and she walks off with the twins.

Later, Nubia tries using Gina to intimidate the Chang triplets into doing homework for them. Gina, despite being the oldest, is also the shortest sister, so the Changs just laugh at Nubia's threats. Nubia states that they can't shake down people for money or favors without Olay, so they go to the mall to find her. They see Olay in the food court with Penny and her friends. Nubia demands that Penny change Olay back to normal. Penny refuses, saying that Olay doesn't want to go back to the way she was. The other girls aren't afraid of Nubia and Gina, and tell them to leave. Nubia asks if Olay is going to do something about the girls disrespecting her sisters. Olay just sips her soda and doesn't move. Nubia is insulted, saying that Olay's new look has completely changed her. She adds that Olay will always be a Gross, no matter what, then leaves with Gina. The other girls are happy about this, and Penny says that Nubia doesn't speak for Olay anymore. But, Zoey points out that Penny is doing exactly what Nubia does: make decisions on Olay's behalf. Penny sees Zoey's point, and tells Olay that she must make decisions based on her own wants, and not the ones of others. Olay understands and quietly goes to leave, but Penny gives Olay a friendship bracelet before she goes. Olay gives Penny another hug, then walks out.

Trudy, Oscar, Suga Mama, Puff, and the twins go to the commercial shoot. While Suga Mama and Puff raid the catering table, Trudy and Oscar meet the director. The director sends the babies to makeup, and they start setting the scene. Oscar "negotiates" the contracts that were sent, complaining about certain clauses. The director starts getting annoyed, and says if Oscar has a problem with the contracts, they will get someone else to fill the role. Trudy begs Oscar to stay out of the way, but Oscar declares that he will not get pushed around by the director. Oscar then complains about the Caucasian man holding the now-crying twins, implying he himself should play the twins' father. The director counters that the Caucasian man is just a stand-in for rehearsal, and that the scene calls for the babies to cry, so he pinched them. Oscar's complaining gets to be too much, so the director "directs" Oscar to leave the set immediately.

A few days later, the school dance has begun. At first, no one is dancing. LaCienega says that the cool students don't dance, and this just confuses Zoey. Penny is upset that Olay did not show up, and thought she had made a positive change. But, a cheering crowd starts to form, and at the center are Olay and Omar, dancing together. Eventually, everyone starts pairing up to dance. Zoey even gets to dance with Sergei. Olay spots Penny, and points at her wrist. She is wearing the friendship bracelet.

The following school day, Zoey approaches the girls, wearing her regular clothes again. Penny asks what happened, and Zoey says that Sergei liked her old self, and not the "superficial, capitalist, fly girl" she turned into. Nubia and Gina approach Penny and her friends, demanding their money. Dijonay tries telling Nubia off, but Olay, also wearing her regular clothes, gets between them. Penny asks why Olay isn't dressed up. Nubia explains that Omar took Olay out to dinner after the dance, but refused to pay for Olay's 5 hot dogs. Olay is heartbroken, no longer wants to dress up, and is ready to hurt people again. The girls hand over their money and the Gross sisters take it. Before they leave, Olay shows Penny that she is still wearing the friendship bracelet. Penny smiles, feeling that Olay really did change, if only a little.

Some time later, the diaper commercial airs on TV. Oscar is excited to watch, but is surprised when he sees Trudy on-screen with the twins. Trudy tells him the director liked the way the twins interacted with her, so he cast her as the mother. Suga Mama and Puff appear on-screen too, to add "sex appeal," and to stop Puff from eating from the catering table. Even Penny appears in the commercial. Oscar wonders who played the father, and Denzel Washington appears on-screen. Oscar is disappointed in this, but is interrupted by honking outside the door. Denzel has arrived in a limo to take the cast to lunch. As the family piles into the limo, Oscar demands that he be given his 95% for managing the twins.

Trivia[]

  • At one point, Nubia calls Penny "J.J.," and tells her "The good times are over." This is a reference to the 70s sitcom Good Times, and one of the lead characters, J.J. Evans.
  • The song set to Olay's makeover montage is "Video" by India.Arie.
  • It used to be fairly common to pinch a baby to make them cry for a film production. Film and TV crews also would use loud noises or bad smells to scare or disgust the baby into crying. But, in modern times, the film crew would either take away a toy, pretend to cry themselves, or just wait for the baby to cry on their own.
