Epcot-Japan-1024x768

The Japan Pavilion is part of the World Showcase in Epcot at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Layout[]

The Japan pavilion is made up of buildings surrounding a courtyard. The entrance to the courtyard features a Japanese Pagoda, modeled after the Horyuji Temple in Nara, whose five levels represent the five elements of earth, water, fire, wind and sky in Buddhist teachings. The torii gate of the Itsukushima Shrine decorates the water in front of the pavilion. The area is filled with Japanese pools and gardens. At the end of the courtyard is the gate to a replica of Shirasagi-jo, a 17th century Japanese fortress in Himeji, complete with a moat, which leads to a display of Japanese culture.

Trivia[]

  • There were originally plans to build a Mt. Fuji roller coaster, but Kodak (who sponsored Journey Into Imagination at the time) vetoed the project due to name similarities with its main competitor.
  • Another planned attraction for the pavilion was a clone of a pre-existing attraction: Meet the World from Tokyo Disneyland, but was ultimately dropped due to various problems within the development of the structure itself.
  • A Bullet Train Simulator featuring Japan's iconic kaiju Godzilla was at one point even considered. However, Disney was unable to acquire the rights from Toho; who at the time were incredibly strict on the use of Godzilla outside of Japan.
