Incredibles 2 is an upcoming Pixar film and sequel to the 2004 film, The Incredibles. It will be released on June 15, 2018.

Plot Synopsis

Everyoneā€™s favorite family of superheroes is back in Incredibles 2 ā€“ but this time Helen is in the spotlight, leaving Bob at home with Violet and Dash to navigate the day-to-day heroics of "normal" life. It's a tough transition for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack's emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone must find a way to work together again ā€” which is easier said than done, even when they're all Incredible.[1]

Production

Director Brad Bird stated in 2007 that he was open to the idea of a sequel if he could come up with an idea superior to the original film: "I have pieces that I think are good, but I don't have them all together."[7]

During an interview in May 2013, Bird reiterated his interest in making a sequel. "I have been thinking about it. People think that I have not been, but I have. Because I love those characters and love that world," said Bird. "I am stroking my chin and scratching my head. I have many, many elements that I think would work really well in another Incredibles film, and if I can get ā€˜em to click all together, I would probably wanna do that."[8]

On March 18, 2014, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Pixar had begun pre-production on The Incredibles 2 and Cars 3[9] with The Incredibles director Brad Bird working on the story[10] but no one yet confirmed as director.[11] Later that month, Samuel L. Jackson told Digital Spy that he would likely reprise his role as Frozone in the sequel.[12] In April 2015, Bird revealed to NPR that he has begun writing the screenplay for the sequel.[13] In May 2015, Bird confirmed that the Incredibles sequel would be his next film following Tomorrowland.[14] He also stated that the movie will not reflect trends in the superhero genre since the first film's release, explaining, "I don't think that kind of idea stays interesting for very long. ... For me, the interesting thing was never the superhero part of it. It was more the family dynamic, and how do superhero things play into that."[15]

According to the 2015 SĆ£o Paulo Disney Expo, the film was implied to be released in 2019, fifteen years after the original.[16] It was later confirmed for release on June 21, 2019 [17], Bird later confirmed on Twitter that Michael Giacchino will return as the composer.[18]

On October 26, 2016, the sequel's release date was swapped with Toy Story 4's release date, due to the former's production moving a lot faster than anticipated, while the latter was lagging in production.[19]

In November 2016, it was confirmed that Holly Hunter will reprise her role as Helen Parr in the sequel.[20]

On December 15, 2016, Samuel L. Jackson posted a photo on his Facebook page, that he had begun recording his lines for the highly anticipated sequel, confirming his return as Frozone.[5]

On May 5, 2017, Giacchino confirmed that he had started working with the film's score.[21]

On July 7, 2017, just a week prior to D23, the first official concept art of the film was shown off (and with it the name of the sequel officially being changed to Incredibles 2), it confirms that the sequel's storyline would pick up directly where the first film ended with the Parr family fighting The Underminer and the family will retain their designs from the first film, it also confirms Edna Mode will return as well (with Bird himself later confirmed to be returning).

During the D23 Expo, Craig T. Nelson and Sarah Vowell were confirmed to be reprising their roles from the first film as Bob Parr and Violet Parr respectively, while Dash Parr was recast with newcomer Huck Milner (replacing Spencer Fox), later that same day, story details were revealed as Brad Bird confirmed that the film will focus on Elastigirl and will continue from where the first film ended.[22]

In November 2017, the highly anticipated teaser trailer was shown off, along with more story details, and with the announcement of Bob Odenkirk and Catherine Keener joining the cast.

Trivia

  • The Incredibles will be the fifth Pixar film to become a franchise, following Toy Story, Cars, Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo.
    • It will be the first official Pixar sequel to pick up directly right where its predecessor ended (a minute after the first film ended), rather than having a sequel take place years later.
    • It will be the fourth official sequel to focus on the secondary character (in this case being Helen Parr) instead of the protagonist of the original film (joining Cars 2, Monsters University and Finding Dory) and will also be the fourth film (second sequel overall) to feature a female protagonist (with the previous three being Brave, Inside Out and Finding Dory).
    • It'll also be the third sequel to not have the same name as that of the original film having dropped The out of the title sequence of the original film (joining Monsters University and Finding Dory), this was likely done to shorten the name of the sequel for marketability purposes.
  • This is the fourth Pixar film to have two producers since Toy Story 2.
  • Incredibles 2 is the first Pixar sequel directed by Brad Bird (his second overall) and will be the third official Pixar movie to focus solely on a human cast (following both the first film and Brave).
  • Incredibles 2 will be the seventh Pixar film scored by Michael Giacchino following The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up, Cars 2, Inside Out, and Coco.
    • It will also be the first Pixar sequel to a film he has previously scored.
  • The fourteen year gap between the first film and sequel is the longest waiting time between a Disney/Pixar film and it's sequel (with Finding Dory's thirteen year gap being the second longest, and Monsters University being the third longest with a twelve year gap), the long waiting gap is likely a direct reference to the original film's fifteen year later setting.
    • The switching of the sequel's original release is very similar to the first film's original proposed release of 2006 being switched with the first Cars film with The Incredibles being moved to 2004 with Cars being pushed back from 2005 to 2006 (in regards to the sequel, which swapped release dates with Toy Story 4).
