Iguanodon was one of the first dinosaurs ever to be discovered. It lived in the early Cretaceous period, about 110–140 million years ago. This particular Iguanodon is showcased in the Walt Disney feature filmDinosaur.
Iguanodon could grow to a length of 33 feet (10 meters) and a height of 10 (3 meters) feet tall on all fours, but on its hind legs, it could stand 16 (5 meters) feet tall. It could also move on all fours, or just on its hind legs. The "hands" of the Iguanodon made this ornithopod different from most other dinosaurs. Each hand had five "fingers". Three fingers in the middle had hoof-like claws, which were useful when walking. Another finger could be pulled in toward the palm and was used to grasp with. A fifth finger was a sharp, spiked thumb used for defense.
Iguanodons were seen many times in the movie. The protagonist, Aladar, was an Iguanodon. Members of the herd, including its leader Kron, his sister Neera, and his lieutenant Bruton, were also Iguanodons.
In the film, the Iguanodons were portrayed with lips instead of a beak because the producers found that this was easier to animate.
