George Lopez is an American actor, stand-up comedian, and talk show host. He is best known for his main role as a fictionalized version of himself in the ABC sitcom of the same name (20022007), as well as for being the host on the TBS late-night talk show Lopez Tonight (20092011). He is also well-known for voicing Thurman in Escape from Planet Earth, Carlos the Balinese cat in the 2010 live-action adaptation of Marmaduke, Rafael the toucan in the Blue Sky's Rio films, Grouchy Smurf in the Sony Pictures live-action Smurfs films, and Pablo the cockatoo in Cats & Dogs 3: Paws Unite!.

For Disney, he voiced Papi in the Beverly Hills Chihuahua film trilogy and played John Sweeney in the 2008 Touchstone Pictures film Swing Vote. He also hosted the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade special at Disneyland in 2003.

Lopez was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Frieda and Anatasio Lopez, a migrant worker. He is of Mexican descent. He was deserted by his father when he was two months old and by his mother when he was 10 years old, but was raised by his maternal grandmother, Benita Gutierrez, a factory worker, and step-grandfather, Refugio Gutierrez, a construction worker. Lopez attended San Fernando High School, graduating in 1979.

Lopez has a genetic condition that caused his kidneys to deteriorate. His doctors had told him in April 2004 that he was going to require an organ transplant but he postponed the operation until finishing the fourth season of George Lopez. In 2005, his wife Ann donated one of her kidneys to Lopez. The transplant was successful; Lopez lost 45 lb (20 kg) after the operation due in part to the improvement in his health. He brought awareness to the issue on his show; his character's son Max was diagnosed with a similar illness.
