"Mickey's 50" is a 90-minute special that aired on The Wonderful World of Disney on November 19, 1978. The special was made to commemorate the 50th birthday of Mickey Mouse and highlights many moments in his career.

Synopsis[]

This special highlights many portions of Mickey Mouse's 50-year career, including his debut in Steamboat Willie, his color debut in The Band Concert, his feature debut in Fantasia, his foray into television with The Mickey Mouse Club and becoming the host of Disneyland and Walt Disney World. The special also explores Mickey's personal relationships, including his girlfriend Minnie Mouse and his arch-rival Peg-Leg Pete. Throughout the special, there is a three-part live-action/stop-motion short animated by and starring Mike Jitlov paying tribute to Mickey. The show closes with the special song "The Whole World Wants to Wish You Happy Birthday, Mickey Mouse".

Featured are many special guest stars, including Peter Sellers, Edgar Bergen, Annette Funicello, Kermit the Frog, Sally Field, Cheryl Ladd, O.J. Simpson, Karen and Richard Carpenter, and even former president Gerald Ford.

  • The third part of the Mike Jitlov segment, Mouse Mania can be seen as a bonus feature on the Walt Disney Treasures DVD Mickey Mouse in Living Color: Volume 2.
    • It was also featured, with different music, as an occasional interlude between videos on DTV.
  • This special aired two months after the death of Edgar Bergen.
  • This is the first time that characters from properties Disney didn't own at the time but would own in the future appeared on a Disney special (Kermit, R2-D2, and Chewbacca).
