He is probably best known for his roles as Seymour Krelborn in the 1986 horror comedy musical film Little Shop of Horrors, Dark Helmet (a parody of Darth Vader) in Mel Brooks' Spaceballs (a parody of Star Wars), Louis Tully in the Ghostbusters films, and Barney Rubble in the 1994 live-action adaptation of The Flintstones.

For Disney, he starred as bumbling inventor Wayne Szalinski in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and its two sequels: Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, as well as the Disney theme park attraction based on the films, Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. He also voiced Rutt the moose in Brother Bear and Brother Bear 2. Additionally, he guest-starred in an episode of Muppets Tonight, and was also notably the featured celebrity of both the July and October 1992 issues of Disney Adventures. He will return to reprise his role as Wayne Szalinski in Shrunk (thus making his first return of acting in nearly 15 years).
