Red Gill is first seen entering an archery tournament at Nottingham fair organized by Prince John and his new Sheriff of Nottingham in order to choose which archer will join and serve them in gathering taxes from the poor in King Richard's absence.
According to the Sheriff, Red Gill is among the finest archer he has ever recruited to join them until his archery is outwitted and outmatched by Robin Fitzooth and his father, Hugh Fitzooth even when Red Gill mocks Robin after shooting his arrow and before Robin and his father shoot theirs.
Knowing the Sheriff's true intentions, after Hugh Fitzooth and his son defy the Sheriff and refuse to join him, the Sheriff sends Red Gill to kill them. In the forest, Red Gill manages to kill Hugh Fitzooth with an arrow shot on the back. Luckily, Robin manages to avenge his father's death by killing Red Gill with an arrow shot on his chest when Red Gill tries killing him next. Thus, begins Robin's life as Robin Hood, an outlaw living in Sherwood Forest who steals from the rich and gives to the poor.
