The Isle of Naboombu is a crescent-shaped island in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. It is the home of the animals that Astoroth experimented on with a spell that made them more human in behavior. It is also the location of the Star of Astoroth. Ruled by King Leonidas, it is also home to the Fisherman Bear, the Secretary Bird, Mr. Codfish, and the soccer animals. No human beings are allowed on the island.

Background[]

The Isle of Naboombu is a fictional island not found anywhere on the world's map. As said above, it is a place inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. The setting itself is an animated sequence which is accessed by magic.

Points of Interests[]

  • Naboombu Lagoon: An underwater place inhabited by anthropomorphic fish and marine animals. One of the places seen is the Beautiful Briny Ballroom.
  • The Beach: The place where Emelius, Price, and the children encounter the Fisherman Bear. Before he can throw Mr. Browne back to the sea, Paul explains that anyone in Naboombu can see the king to which the Bear directs the family to the King's throne.
  • Soccer Field: A location where the soccer matches take place. All the spectators and soccer players seen here are anthropomorphic animals.

Role in the film[]

As Professor Emelius Browne, Miss Eglantine Price, and the children travel there, they end up at Naboombu Lagoon. Arriving there, the group encounters a nearby codfish who greets the gang. Miss Price then asks Mr. Codfish to know where the Isle of Naboombu is, to which he explains to her that the isle is above the lagoon and is unmissable, explaining that he shouldn't go there as a fish. Along the way, the group encounters an animated seahorse who surprises Price just as Emelius sings the musical number "The Beautiful Briny" as the family explores the underwater world around them where they encounter animated fish and sea creatures around them. Along the way, they enter the Beautiful Briny Ballroom where they encounter fish, lobsters, and an octopus performing. As Miss Price and Emelius dance together, the fish cheer for their performance alongside the children. Mr. Codfish awards the couple the ruddy cup for best performance. However, this is interrupted when the Fisherman Bear grabs the bed with the children in it as the fish retreat upon noticing the hook at the lagoon. Encountering him on the beach and arriving on the surface, he directs Emelius to a sign saying, "No peopling allowed" under the rule of King Leonidas. Paul talks to the Bear, explaining him that anyone can see the king, despite the warning sign according to the book. As Miss Price asks him to let the family see the king, the Bear directs the family across the jungle to see the king.

Arriving there, the group encounters a Secretary Bird telling him that he has a frightful temper. The Secretary Bird explains to Emelius that the King is the greatest soccer player and due to a problem, the match cannot take place. He then explains to Emelius that he once was captain of the Tottenham Hotspurs for two years for three seasons with Manchester United in order to verify if he knows about soccer. The Secretary Bird directs Mr. Browne to the King's throne. King Leonidas explains to Mr. Browne that for years, Naboombu has trouble finding referees around the island as the family discovers the Star of Astoroth he is wearing around his neck.

Later, the family is taken to a soccer field to watch the match by sitting at King's throne as the King begins the match while Mr. Browne serves as the volunteer referee. The game then begins during a match between the Dirty Yellows and the True Blues. After a tough match, the family leaves and bids a farewell to the King. However, King Leonidas realizes that the family took the star he was wearing around his neck much to the Secretary Bird's worry. Trying to escape, King Leonidas charges towards the family while Miss Price turns Leonidas into a rabbit just as the family travels back to the real world.

Stage Musical[]

In the musical adaptation of Bedknobs & Broomsticks, the Island is renamed to the "Island Of Nopeepo", as a play on how "no people" are allowed. In this version of the story, the dance contest in Nopeepo Lagoon is in order to win an audience with King Leonidas, with the fish no realizing that all fish who win an audience with the King are, in actuality, made into his dinner. When the fish who win the dance contest learn this, they give the trophy to Miss Price & Professor Browne. Instead of a soccer game, Professor Brown puts on a magic show with Miss Price to distract the king long enough to switch the Star of Astoroth with a feather boa, and the group escape before King Leonidas can devour them.
