Laura Elizabeth Dern is an American actress, director, and producer. For Disney, she played Vice Admiral Holdo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Dern was born on February 10, 1967, in Los Angeles, California. The daughter of actors Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. Her first film was an appearance as an extra in White Lightning which her mother starred, and she made her official debut in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. In 1982, Dern served as Miss Golden Globe at 15 years old. At 16, she attained emancipation, which allowed her to work the same amount of hours as an adult on films. Since then, her film career has flourished.
For her performance in the 1991 film Rambling Rose, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, while for her performance in the 2014 film Wild, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. For the 2019 film Marriage Story, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, for which she won. However, Dern's most recognized role is Dr. Ellie Sattler in Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, and Jurassic World: Dominion.
Her other film credits include Mask, Blue Velvet, Citizen Ruth, October Sky, Dr. T and the Women, I Am Sam, The Master, Little Fockers, The Fault in Our Stars, and Little Women (2019). Dern also appeared in television shows, like Fallen Angels, Frasier, Ellen, Enlightened, F Is for Family, Twin Peaks, and Big Little Lies, for which she won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Television Movie.
