John Herrick McIntire was an American actor and voice actor. McIntire worked more closely with his wife, Jeanette Nolan in the 1977 Disney animated feature film The Rescuers, in which he voiced the cat Rufus and she voiced the muskrat Ellie Mae. Four years later, the couple worked on another Disney film The Fox and the Hound, with McIntire as the voice of Mr. Digger, a badger, and Nolan as the voice of Widow Tweed. His other Disney roles were Mr. Judson in Herbie Rides Again, John Elder in The Light in the Forest, and Amos Reed in the 1989 Touchstone Pictures film Turner & Hooch.
John McIntire was born in Spokane, Washington and grew up in Eureka, Montana around ranchers, an experience that later inspired his performances in dozens of film and television westerns. He studied at the University of California for two years before dropping out and began acting in radio dramas such as Tarzan and the Diamond of Asher, Crime Doctor, I Love a Mystery, Lincoln Highway, and the radio version of Gunsmoke.
He soon made his way into film and television where he appeared in The Street with No Name, The Asphalt Jungle, Winchester '73, You're in the Navy Now, Apache, The Far Country, The Kentuckian, The Tin Star, Who Was That Lady?, Psycho (1960), Elmer Gantry, Flaming Star, Rooster Cogburn, and Cloak & Dagger. His television credits include Daniel Boone, The Incredible Hulk, Diff’rent Strokes, Wagon Train, Naked City, Cimarron City, The Americans, The Virginian, The Twilight Zone, Bonanza, and Night Court.
McIntire died on January 30, 1991 from emphysema and lung cancer in Pasadena.
