Charles Dawson "Daws" Butler was an American voice actor, who specialized in voicing characters in animated films and television series. He worked mostly for the Hanna-Barbera studio, where he originated the voices of many iconic characters, including Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, Snagglepuss, Wally Gator, Mr. Jinks, Elroy Jetson, Dixie, Augie Doggie and Spike Bulldog. He also voiced the Fish/Carlos K. Krinklebine in the 1971 animated TV special version of The Cat in the Hat and Wally Walrus in the Woody Woodpecker series.

His only known Disney work was voicing a Penguin Waiter and a Turtle in Mary Poppins, Reason in Understanding Alcohol Use and Abuse, Geppetto and Stromboli in a Pinocchio record album, Trusty, Jim Dear, and Boris in a Lady and the Tramp record album, and the Gryphon (a character cut from Alice in Wonderland) in a 1950's Jell-O commercial.

Along with Stan Freberg, Paul Frees, and June Foray, Butler also provided voices for countless Disneyland LP albums featuring recreations of several successful Disney cartoons and films.

Butler also taught and mentored other aspiring voice actors in a converted studio workshop at his Beverly Hills home, with Corey Burton and Nancy Cartwright among them.

He was also a friend of Don Messick.

Trivia[]

  • Butler was once suggested to voice a leading character in The Wuzzles, but was later turned down because Disney didn't want a character sounding like a Hanna-Barbera character.[1]
