He starred in many film and television roles, and was best known for playing Paul "Wrecking" Crewe in The Longest Yard, Bo Darville "Bandit" in the Smokey and the Bandit film trilogy, and voicing Charie B. Barkin in Don Bluth's 1989 animated film All Dogs Go to Heaven.

His Disney roles included Walt Disney World 4th of July Spectacular, where he made an appearance as himself, and appeared in "Mickey's 50" and "Mickey's 60th Birthday". He also collaborated with Disney's Buena Vista Television subsidiary for the game show Win, Lose or Draw, which was based off game nights held at his house (the set was modeled after his living room); he co-produced with host Bert Convy and game show veteran Richard S. Kline; Disney Channel aired Teen Win, Lose, or Draw from 1989 to 1992 and revived the show in 2014. Reynolds also played himself in The Golden Girls, Judge Walter Burns in Mystery, Alaska, Blaine Gibbons in the 1996 Miramax film Citizen Ruth, and Joey "Bats" Pistella in the 2000 Touchstone Pictures film The Crew.

In addition to his actual Disney roles, Reynolds was also spoofed as the character Boat Reynolds in Planes: Fire & Rescue, although he does not speak, and was mentioned in Herbie Goes Bananas.
