Disney Fairies

From The Unofficial DisneyWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Disney Fairies is a Disney franchise launched in 2005. The line began with the publication of the book Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg, a novel written by Gail Carson Levine, the authoress of Ella Enchanted and illustrated by David Christiana. A chapter book series has also been released with four computer-generated direct-to-DVD films in development, the first one to be titled Tinker Bell. Additionally, there are toys, clothing and accessories withing this licensing of the franchise

The franchise centers on Tinker Bell, the expressive pixie from Peter Pan and its’ sequel, Return to Never Land. In both prior Disney films, Tinker Bell communicated through pantomime and ringing bells, often translated by Peter. The film marks the first time Tinker Bell has a voice actress, Mae Whitman, who provides Tink’s voice when the film was released to both DVD and Blu-Ray on October 28, 2008. Ms. Whitman replaced Brittney Murphy, as there were scheduling conflicts between her and Disney Animation chairman John Lasseter.

Along with Tinker Bell, Disney Fairies also features several original characters created specifically for the line. The Disney Fairies film series has a different cast of characters than those featured in the book series. Both series take place in Pixie Hollow, the secret world of the Never Land fairies.

[edit] Prilla

Prilla is probably the nicest fairy. Her talent is mainland-visiting-hand-clapping, and she flies to the mainland (our world) whenever a fairy is in danger of dying, to encourage children who still believe in fairies to clap their hands and prevent the demise. A fairy dies when the child who created him or her (by laughing for the first time) stops believing in fairies. Prilla's talent was intially obscure, but was discovered in "Mother Dove and the Quest for the Egg" when it was evident that she could "blink" to the mainland easily, which the other fairies cannot do. In "Prilla and the Butterfly Lie" she tries to help fairies with other talents, like caterpillar shearing, but gets into trouble when she tells her friend Nettle that she actually likes butterflies better than caterpillars (to avoid having to help Nettle shear any more caterpillars.) Butterflies are notorious tricksters, and lead Prilla on a merry chase. Prilla learns to stand up for herself and not try to make the other fairies like her by telling white lies, which is good advice for all human girls as well. She is also one of the few fairies who is normal in weight (i.e. not extremely thin.)

[edit] Bess

Bess is an art talent (not found on the Disney fairies website or in the movie) and gets into trouble in "Bess's Masterpiece" when her pictures become too popular and every fairy wants her to paint a portrait. She finally discovers that her talent is most fulfilled when she paints what she wants to paint, not necessarially portraits, and the fairies discover another fad to pursue (clothing).

[edit] Beck

Beck is an animal talent, and in "Beck and the Great Berry Battle" she negotiates a truce between the hummingbirds and the chipmunks, when a war (complete with berry "bombs") breaks out over a misplaced hummingbird nest.

[edit] Fira

Fira is a light talent. Her book is "Fira and the Full Moon."
