- The title of this episode is a play on the name of the sci-fi movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
- The classic Disney character Gustav the Giant makes a cameo appearance as one of the (human-sized) Woodcutters.
- This is originally the ninth episode to premiere separately from its sibling segment, which aired two weeks prior (skipping the episode that had aired the previous week, which was combined with another segment). Both segments were later combined, as originally intended, for all subsequent airings.
