"What we're doing here is a takeoff of a musical comedy. Have your chorus line; have people setting out tables. Then Chanticleer [enters]: like you'd stage a musical comedy"
Marc Davis on the composition of the song
Chanticleer was a song written for the proposed 1960 film of the same name. Meant to open the film, it was to have been sung by all of the farmyard animals as they completed their morning routine.

Lyrics

Farmyard Animals: Who brings up the morning sun?

Who makes all the chickens run?

Who is loved by everyone?

Chanticleer!

Over whom do we all fuss?

Whom does every girl discuss?

Someone who's so good to us

Chanticleer!

Chanticleer, Chanticleer

Il est tres populaire

Always charming, always gay

We're enchanted every day

And he keeps the fox away

Chanticleer!

(spoken): Ah Chanticleer, Bonjour!

Chanticleer (spoken): Bonjour, bonjour mes amies!

Ah tres jolie, ma petite poupee!

(sung): ' Who brings up the morning sun?

Who makes all you chickens run?

Who is loved by everyone?

Farmyard Animals: You! Chanticleer

Chanticleer: Over whom do you all fuss?

Whom does every girl discuss?

Someone who's so good to us

Farmyard Animals: You! Chanticleer

Chanticleer, Chanticleer

Vous etes tres debonair

Chanticleer: Am I charming, am I gay?

Do I thrill you every day?

Do I keep the fox away?

Farmyard Animals: Oui, oui Chanticleer!

Oui, oui Chanticleer!

Vive le, vive le Chanticleer!
