Ivan Simon Cary Elwes is an English actor, voice actor, and writer, who is best known for his roles as Westley/Dread Pirate Roberts in the 1987 fantasy comedy film The Princess Bride and Dr. Lawrence Gordon in the horror film series Saw. He is also well-known for his other box office hit films, such as Days of Thunder, Hot Shots!, Twister, Liar Liar, Kiss the Girls, and Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Additionally, he voiced Garrett in the 1998 Warner Bros. animated film Quest for Camelot.

For Disney, he has done multiple voice roles in Robert Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol (as Portly Gentleman #1, Dick Wilkins, Mad Fiddler, Guest #2, and Business Man #1) and in Epic Mickey 2, where he took over the role of Gremlin Gus from Bob Joles, respectively. He also voiced Baron Humbert von Gikkingen in the English dub of Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns, Donald Curtis in Porco Rosso, and played Captain William Boone in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, John Houseman in the 1999 Touchstone Pictures film Cradle Will Rock, and Sir Edgar in the 2004 Miramax film Ella Enchanted (although not technically a Disney film). Additionally, he voiced Paris of Troy in the Hercules episode "Hercules and the Trojan War", Prince Roderick and Basil in Sofia the First, and portrayed a British Intelligence Officer in the ABC Studios TV show Perception.

Elwes was born in Westminster, London. He is the youngest of three sons of portrait painter Dominic Elwes and interior designer and socialite Tessa Kennedy. Elwes is the brother of artist Damian Elwes and film producers Cassian Elwes and Milica Kastner. His stepfather, Elliott Kastner, was an American film producer and the first American to set up independent film production in the United Kingdom. His paternal grandfather was the portrait painter Simon Elwes, whose own father was the diplomat and tenor Gervase Elwes. One of Elwes's great-grandfathers was the 1st Baron Rennell, while one of his great-great-grandfathers was the 8th Earl of Denbigh. Elwes has English, Irish, Scottish, Croatian-Jewish, and Serbian ancestry, the latter two from his maternal grandmother, Daška McLean, whose second husband, Billy McLean, was an operative for the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the Second World War.
