The Brutish Guard and Oafish Guard are the secondary antagonists of Disney's 1996 animated feature film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. They serve as Judge Claude Frollo's most trusted guardsmen.

Appearances[]

The Hunchback of Notre Dame[]

They are first seen when Phoebus arrives in the city of Paris. He asks them for directions to the Palace of Justice, and they completely ignore him. Eventually, the pair start harassing Esmeralda, accusing her of "stealing" the coins in her hat, making her retort that she earned them. Esmeralda's pet goat Djali head butts both the guards, giving Esmeralda a chance to escape. The guards go after her, only to be blocked by Phoebus pulling his horse Achilles into their path and ordering him to sit on the Brutish Guard. The Oafish guard draws a blade and threatens Phoebus. Phoebus draws his own sword, revealing his armor and rank in the process, leaving the Oafish Guard scrambling to salute. Phoebus asks to be escorted through the city and the duo eventually lead Phoebus to the Palace of Justice.

During the Festival of Fools, they start a riot by throwing tomatoes and fruits at Quasimodo, who had attended the festival and was just crowned the King of Fools. After Frollo orders Esmeralda's arrest for aiding Quasimodo, the guards pursue her up onto the stage, where she jumps and crowd surfs out of their reach. The two guards attempt to follow suit, but the crowd parts to let them fall and land hard on the ground.

During Frollo's performance of "Hellfire", the Brutish Guard informs Frollo of Esmeralda's escape from Notre Dame. Later, when Phoebus defies Frollo by rescuing an innocent family Frollo attempts to murder, it is the two guards who subdue him and prepare to execute him on Frollo's orders. Esmeralda intervenes and helps Phoebus escape. Subsequently, the Brutish Guard is promoted to captain by Frollo.

During the battle at Notre Dame, the Oafish Guard is knocked out by Phoebus, who steals his keys and escapes his cage. The Brutish Guard is ordered by Frollo to break down the door of Notre Dame, and he uses a beam Quasimodo dropped as a battering ram.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame II[]

Despite their roles in the previous film, they are also seen performing their duties in the sequel, which implies their crimes were pardoned by the king.

After Phoebus is proven right about Sarousch and his circus being behind the robberies, these two were seen arresting Madellaine for her involvement while she tries to explain she wasn't playing with Quasimodo's feelings.
