Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch CBE (born July 19, 1976) is an English actor, producer, and voice actor who is best known for his roles as Smaug and The Necromancer (both motion capture and voice) in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit film trilogy, William Ford in Steve McQueen's historical drama 12 Years a Slave, Khan Noonien Singh in the 2013 science-fiction action Star Trek Into Darkness, and as Alan Turing in the historical drama The Imitation Game, for which he received an nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor. He currently stars as fictional detective Sherlock Holmes on the BBC crime drama series Sherlock since 2010 with Martin Freeman as Watson.

He played Major Jamie Stewart in Steven Spielberg's 2011 war drama film War Horse, and Julian Assange in the 2013 film The Fifth Estate, which were both under the Touchstone Films banner.

He plays the titular Doctor Strange in the Marvel Studios film of the same name, in Thor: Ragnarok, in Avengers: Infinity War, and in The Avengers 4.

He also performed motion capture for Dormammu in Doctor Strange.
